The other day I saw a talk by Daniel Dennett, “If dinosaurs evolved into birds, what will religions evolve into”. It was fascinating, and there were a couple of things that struck me about his talk.

A major theme was that religion is changing rapidly, in order to survive, and to demonstrate…

^^but religions are tied up inextricably with the actions of humans— we follow their laws, we perpetuate them, teach them to others. Religion, without adherents is non-existent, and people are always changing, so to me it seems inevitable that religions will evolve. I mean, if you look at the translations of the Bible— compare King James and NIV maybe, and you can see they already are being altered, however slightly. I know the message is essentially the same, but there is a definite change being made to ‘the immutable word of God’. But I think, perhaps it’s not so much the words themselves that are what’s the most important, but the message behind them. And the enduring appeal of religion as a means of right living and moral values, etc. People want that, and I think that though religions may continue to evolve as society does, there will still be some desire for a moral guide. I guess my point is, that the credibility is still there— in that essentially religion is a guide for people to live their lives, and no matter how the words may change that factor still remains.

Pretty sure we talked about this in person, but writing makes everything seem clearer to me.

I wasn’t disputing that religions change just as people do. What I was trying to say, and I probably didn’t say it very clearly, was that religion was not devised with that inevitability of change in mind. You said “religions are tied up inextricably with the actions of humans”, but religions don’t present themselves as such; they instead present themselves as the word of god/s. And I don’t argue that the basics of Jesus’ teachings (for example) are a very moral guide, but unfortunately there is a lot more to religion than just ideas of love, respect and brotherhood. And abandoning antiquated ideas towards women, sex, slavery and whatnot does not provide a great case for the relevance of religion.

And yes, religion, even if it is not followed in the way it is today, will likely still be a moral guide. But morality is not just enshrined in religion, and it is not a given that it will survive simply as a guide.

Did I respond to your point properly? I apologise if I didn’t. I always get the feeling that I’ve missed a crucial point in discussions like this.

The other day I saw a talk by Daniel Dennett, “If dinosaurs evolved into birds, what will religions evolve into”. It was fascinating, and there were a couple of things that struck me about his talk.

A major theme was that religion is changing rapidly, in order to survive, and to demonstrate this, Dennett compared biological evolution to social evolution. But it seems to me that in Christianity at least, the very nature of religion prevents it from successfully evolving. In my understanding, religious teaching largely stem from the immutable word of god, and god is infinite and all-knowing etc etc. So surely it stands to reason that if religion evolves through the actions of humans, it would lose some credibility, in that the teachings of gods become irrelevant and outdated. And as society, and consequently religion, changes faster and faster, perhaps it will get to the point where religion simply has no credibility as a means of living life.

The second thing that struck me about the talk was Dennett’s discussion of the non-believing clergy, i.e. pastors who no longer believe in God. And it wasn’t until afterwards that I realised how trapped these people would be. Almost every aspect of their lives depends on their faith - their living, their friends and family - and Dennett’s comparison to closeted homosexuals in the 1950s doesn’t seem far off. They are completely unable to confide in ANYONE, apart from LaScola (who conducted interviews with these pastors).
